  1. Some random HIARCS tips:

  3. 1) On PowerMacs, HIARCS runs MUCH faster if you use the
  4.     Connectix Speed Doubler utility. If you don't use
  5.     Speed Doubler, you'd be better off on a Quadra.
  6.     On three test problems, my _minimum_ speedup was four times.
  7.  
  8. 2) Open applications, even in the background, can slow
  9.     things down. I found it took over 50% longer to solve
  10.     the (included) test problem with a SimpleText
  11.     document open in the background than without.
  12.     Be wary of running head to head matches on the same machine
  13.     between two chess programs - one may steal cycles more
  14.     efficiently from the other.
  15.  
  16. 3) Try different monitor color depths, and see which setting
  17.    you like best for the board appearance.
  18.  
  19. 4) Some solution times for "test_problem.pgn", with:
  20.     - Show Analysis = 2
  21.     - Infinite time control
  22.          (do this first - it resets the "Book" and "Brain" settings) 
  23.     - Book OFF
  24.     - Permanent Brain OFF
  25.     Now pick "Swap Sides", and "Play"
  26.  The solution is White: d1-b3. 
  27.  The solution time will appear below the board, with "##"
  28.  replaced by the number of seconds, as follows:
  29.    5>>21 ## d1-b3 d8-d7 f1-b5 b8-c6 g1-f3 = 20
  30.  
  31.    For HIARCS 1.0 Mac ("DBL" means Speed Doubler running).
